Side Effects Of Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate)

What Is Focalin: Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate) is used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults and children over the age of six.

Focalin (Dexmethylphenidate) is a stimulant that helps the patient maintain attention, decrease hyperactivity, and decrease impulsiveness. It is thought to block the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine that are believed to be low in patients with ADHD.

Important Note: Excessive doses of Focalin over a long period of time can produce addiction. It is also possible to develop tolerance to the drug, so that larger doses are needed to produce the original effect.

There is no information about the safety and effectiveness of long-term Focalin treatment in children. However, suppression of growth has been seen with the long-term use of stimulants, so your doctor will watch your child carefully while he or she is taking this drug.

If your child is not growing or gaining weight as expected, the doctor may stop Focalin treatment. This drug should not be given to children under 6 years of age; safety and effectiveness in this age group have not been established.

A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger used by neurons (nerve cells) to communicate in one direction with other neurons. Communication between neurons is accomplished by the recognition of a receptor for a specific chemical messenger; picture a ball (neurotransmitter) in a cup (receptor).

Most drugs only stimulate a temporary release of preexisting stores of neurotransmitters; THEY DO NOTHING TO INCREASE THE PRODUCTION OF NEUROTRANSMITTERS. Once preexisting supplies of neurotransmitters are exhausted, these drugs are unable to stimulate the production and release of additional neurotransmitters."
